Oak strut

Roof trusses are wooden structures that support the mantle of pitched and steep roofs. The design of the truss structure is given by the floor plan of a specific building, the chosen pitch of the roof and the roof cladding. Wooden trusses are most often used in family houses and apartments in mountain areas.

The classic wooden truss consists of a rafter, purlin, wall plate, tie beams, columns, strutting beams and oak struts. These stiffen the truss in the transverse direction, the strips in the longitudinal direction. In gothic and today’s trusses of a collar type, the columns create the base of longitudinal and transverse leeward. The oak strut connects with rafters through collar ties. The truss can be long up to 11 m so that the oak strut can support it correctly. 

Truss repairs are not difficult at all. Repairs are facilitated by the fact that the individual trusses are very simple. If it is necessary to replace the oak strut or any other part, the work is relatively easy. The most common problem of old trusses is damage to wood by rot or wood-destroying fungus.

Most often, parts such as the head or oak strut are damaged, where the individual elements can be permanently deformed by deflection or breakage due to moisture. They cannot fulfil their function. The old trusses are relatively subtle and dimensioned for light roofing material. Therefore the most weight-bearing elements may crack. Truss repairs can be carried out on the basis of a static assessment, which determines whether the whole beams need to be replaced or only a certain part of them. The dimensions of the newly inserted elements must correspond to the existing elements. This is the only way to ensure perfect roof stability. New parts of beams (prostheses) should be adapted to the profile of the original beams, not vice versa. Cutting the original beams is a bad choice.
