Oak roughly squared logs

Attic ceilings are among the oldest ceiling structures. They represent the oldest type ceilings that were documented in the Middle Ages on all building of all social classes. With their massiveness and composition, they were equal to the timbered construction walls. Attic ceilings were made of special semi edged squared oak logs called cants.

Attic ceilings were used to span 4.5 – 6 m in simple buildings. The disadvantage is the considerable consumption of wood and also the placement of the attic ceiling along its entire length which causes a significant weakening of the supporting masonry. The oak logs – cants are placed either in a groove or on a ledge on the supporting wall or in U-shaped lattice girders. The lower face of the beam – log was without plaster or reed plaster was used. The upper face of the beam was backfilled and the floor was constructed on beams or on a layer of clay. Nowadays, this solution is very laborious and uneconomical.

Oak rough logs and edged beams

Oak rough logs are roughly machined whole or split logs or also beams cut in half. The basic type of attic ceiling has oak rough logs (un-edged logs) with a diameters that is no smaller that the profiles used in the walls. They are laid in the direction of longitudinal axis of the building, in the middle they are supported by one edged beam.

The medieval square beam has the usual bevel with protrusions 20 – 25 cm away from the wall. These cuts were sometimes made in the middle of the beam. This creates a wider area on which one of the motifs of the compass rose was made.
