Oak lumber

At every step we encounter wood. It is used to make objects, furniture, packaging and elements of the surface treatment of buildings. It is a general fact that a wood-panelled interior acquires a pleasant climate and well-being, but it is not the only use of this material. How is oak board lumber divided?

Board lumber

Before wood becomes a material that can be used to make furniture or building materials, it must be subjected to a special treatment done thru special sawing technics. This includes the fact that round wood, i.e. logs, is subjected to cutting with a saw, a special technical device. During this process, the wood is cut into smaller pieces and the result is lumber.

It is divided into:

Live-edged or waney-edged oak lumber – two parallel planes are machined, while the side edges remain rounded, without treatment. This type of lumber can be obtained by simple cutting on saws, i.e. using a saw or gang saw.

Oak squared-up (machined) lumber – this means that all edges are machined and flat.

What exactly is oak lumber?

Simply said, oak board lumber is a result of cut boards of various dimensions. This is the basic product, from which a carpenter or other people involved in the wood production can make construction objects or products. The produced boards have different thicknesses: 19, 22, 25, 32, 28, 50 mm. The strongest can be used for building constructions, scaffolding and terraces while the thinner ones are used for tiling, roof elements and formwork.

Board lumber and its division

In the Czech Republic, there is a following partition of oak board lumber according to the thickness and cross-section.

  • Boards, i.e. elements with a thickness of 19 – 45 mm and a width of 75 to 250 mm,
  • Logs are elements with a thickness of 50 – 100 m and a width of 100 – 250 mm,
  • Slats have a cross section from 12/24 to 29/70 mm,
  • Strips – hobby boards, i.e. elements with a cross section from 38/63 to 75/140 mm,
  • Squares: elements with a cross section from 100/100 to 175/175 mm,
  • Beams are elements with a cross section from 200/200 to 275/275 mm.

Each element made by cutting wood must undergo another process, i.e. drying, before it is sold. This can be done in wood or lumber drying machines specially designed for drying wood. After this process, the oak lumber is ready for sale.
