Green wood oak timber

Fresh cut green wood oak is are not possible to be used for production of any products immediately after cutting. Damp wood undergoes shape and dimensional changes during its subsequent drying and it is easily attacked by biological pests.

Green wood oak timber and its storage

While drying wood, the excess water is removed as soon as possible to the moisture value which must correspond to the environment where the product will be used. The wood is therefore stored and dried at the same time from the moment when the tree was cut down until its processing. Wood tends to keep moisture content according to the environment. An exception is wood that is impregnated or stored in water.

The absolute moisture level of freshly cut oak lumber is 60 – 100%. For hard woods the moisture level of its core is 60 – 80% and moisture level of the sapwood  is 70 – 80%. The fastest water evaporation is from the cross-sectional area.

First, dry cracks arise and suitable conditions for a wood destroying fungi attack are created. You can use a protective coating in this phase. Freshly cut oak timber is stored in way to be isolated from the soil humidity. Then it is taken for further processing.

Drying lumber quality wood is much more complicated than drying wood for burning. When dried for burning, it is sufficient to prevent water from entering to the edges and to cut the logs to a suitable length so that the wood can dry naturally. The only problem is a possible occurrence of the wood destroying fungi when the drying is slow.

Green wood oak timber is possible to be dried both artificially in kilns and naturally.

Natural timber drying

Natural timber drying is gradual drying of cut timber in natural conditions. Freshly felled oak lumber is folded into a timbering according to the given rules. The drying time depends on the width, type of wood and on the initial and final moisture content and temperature. The drying process is controlled by taking moisture samples which are taken from the middle part of the lumber. Their weight is calculated at the end of drying. They are then weighed.
