However, the most common wooden fences are made of oak wood because it is relatively durable and also easily accessible. Usually, oak fence pickets are made of the best wood which underlines their service life. 

Wooden elements of the fence, that are supposed to be dug into the ground, i.e. posts, must be protected against rot with bituminous adhesive for cold use. A wooden fence can have many forms – basic densely laid oak fence panels or boards and beams which show the boundaries of the lot. 

For traditional wooden fences, the cross-sections of wooden posts are usually from 7 × 7 cm to 10 × 10 cm. They are usually placed on a stone or concrete pedestal or on a point base. Metal anchors are the fastening element of the post. A gap should be left between the bottom of the fence and the surface to which it is attached. It will be a natural insulation that will prevent water from staying wet for extended periods of time and allowing the wood to dry faster. The upper part of the post should be provided with a shaped top to prevent the accumulation of water. The span of traditional wooden fences is most often made of rails – horizontal elements transferring the weight of the span to the posts. These are usually beams with a cross-section depending on the weight and span (in a typical fence with a span of 2.5 m, crossbeams with a cross-section of 5 × 10 cm are used).
