Oak battens / laths

Lumber is created by cutting felled trees on battens, boards, planks or square beams. Oak laths have a cross-section with a diameter of 10-25 cm² and it is a squared up lumber. For this type of lumber, their width is less than twice the thickness. 

What can the oak laths be used for 

Oak battens are straight planed and un-planed boards made of quality timber. Battens are very often used in the construction of roofs. Roof oak battens are used in dimensions of 30 x 50 or 40 x 60 mm. Laths are placed on the roof as a base under roof tiles. 

Another option are oak battens which provide roof ventilation. These are nailed to rafters and they are vertically to the roof laths. They are called counter battens. Hydrophilic material is put under them. Square oak battens are suitable for the construction of structures of smaller and larger dimensions. You can effectively use them to build pergolas or grid under the floor. Thanks to their versatility, these slats belong among the most popular semi-finished objects that can be custom-made to meet your requirements. 

Minimum cross-section of oak roof battens 

Un-planed oak roof battens have a minimum cross-section of 30 x 50 mm and they are always laid on the smaller edge. This diameter is usually stated as minimal by many roofing producers. However, roofers recommend using laths with a diameter of 40 x 60 mm. 

The spacing between roof battens ranges from 320 to 360 mm. Usually, the 40 x 60 mm cross-section of an oak batten is used up to a span of 1.2 m. For counter battens, a 2x40x60 mm solution is suitable. In the case of sheet metal roofing, the minimum diameter is 40 x 60 mm.
